1. Why did Parvana's family embrace Shauzia as if she was an old friend, even though they had not met her before?

2. How do you think Parvana felt about running into Shauzia. How would you feel in Parvana's situation? Make a connection to an experience you've had, or another text.

3. Why might Parvana feel uncomfortable about digging up bones for money? Would you dig up the bones? Explain your thinking.

4. Why did Parvana keep her work digging up bones a secret from her family. Try and come up with a least two reasons.

1. Parvanna's family embraced Shauzia like she was a old friend because they were just really happy to see someone that Parvanna knew and that they would be safe, could maybe make more money together.

2. Parvanna felt happy that she ran into Shauzia because she hadn't seen any of her old class mates since the schools were closed by the Taliban and was happy that she knew someone in the market. If I was in Parvanna's situation I would probably be happy to see a girl that was in my class because I would know someone in the market.

3. Parvanna felt uncomfortable digging up bones because she thought the people who had died would be upset about digging up their bones, she didn't think that digging them up was right. She didn't like to go to that grave yard because she was scared of stepping on a land mine and exploding.

4. Parvanna kept it a secret because she knew digging up bones was wrong.

she thought her mother would tell her she couldn't go there again and that maybe her mother would forbid her from going anywhere but the market and to where she gets the water.
